Our technical partner is TM Consulting: A Carbon Trust approved energy consultancy. We have over 40 years experience in energy efficiency, carbon management and environmental consulting.

Paul Taylor

Paul Taylor - Managing Director.

Paul spent 15 years working in media and social enterprise. He recently developed a national climate change campaign for a social marketing agency. Paul is a member of Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute art and climate change community and has contacts with all the major stakeholders in the climate change movement. Paul has been a visiting lecturer in social enterprise at London Metropolitan University.

The Carbon Coach on ‘offsets’

This is what Dave has to say about offsets, and why he supports Carbon Impacts: “My take on ‘offset’ is simple. Like charity, offsets are a good thing.”
“Carbon Impacts offers Offsetting with a difference. 3rd Generation offsetting. Part of that difference is the way offsets are viewed: Carbon offsetting is the last thing you should do – AND the thing you SHOULD do - LAST!

It’s obvious that the more quality ‘offset’ projects that get funded, the better. And… separately…  the less CO2 that we produce, the better.

It’s only when the two get conflated, compared, and equated (!) that we get confused and come unstuck. The two things are distinct.  On the one hand we have CO2 Offset projects, and on the other hand we have CO2 emissions. One can be good.  The other can be bad! They are not interchangeable.

In the early 2000’s it seemed like a good idea to do as much voluntary charity (offset) as we did damage . So it seemed smart to pay to offset each single tonne of CO2 we caused, by each journey or each action.

But much smarter now - is to firstly forget all about offset - and just focus on cutting the carbon damage…Then when remaining CO2 emissions simply cannot yet be avoided, decide to make a large offset ‘donation’ – the sky is the limit!
Why settle for just PARITY (one tonne of offset for one tonne of pollution). Join the MILE-LOW OFFSET CLUB CLASS and AT LEAST TRIPLE OFFSET everything you can e.g. when you create a tonne of CO2e pollution from an air flight, there are lots of things you can do:

  • You can offset that tonne in full (cost £10 or so).
  • You can do TRIPLE offset (£30 or so).
  • You can do FACTOR 10 offset (£100 or so).
  • You can do all of the above, AND resolve not to fly next time, and donate another £100 of offset into the carbon ‘bank’ for good measure!

To fund the backdated ‘offset’ of an AVERAGE UK person will be 10 to 20 tonnes (£100-£200) per year of age. To back-offset ONE whole generation will involve about 1000 tonnes or £10,000 per adult. To back-offset TWO generations the sum is probably about 5000 tonnes. (Four grandparents, two parents.)  Naturally every family is different, some of your loved ones may have been on a carbon dose of 100 tonnes a year!
Thanks, Dave.
