Basa Magogo Granny Fire

Project Location:  South Africa.

Project Type:  Energy Efficiency.

Project Status: Project in operation. WBCSD/WRI verified (previously verified by KPMG). VCS verification process pending.

Project Description: The project activity consists of training users of coal cook stoves a more efficient way of piling the coals and using the brazier. Basa magogo means ‘the granny fire’ and gets its name because an elderly lady in eMbalenhle was central to its development. This project has been well documented with laboratory tests, retention studies, and independent reports. There is qualitative evidence of the mechanisms of coal saving:  This project began in 2006. Carbon credits are necessary for project financing.

Methodology: used to calculate the baseline is the World Business Council for Sustainable Development  (a VCS founder) contained in the “tools for calculation of emissions from stationary sources and mobile sources “.

Additional benefits:

  • Reduces pollution.
  • Reduces the number of upper respiratory tract problems for the local population.
  • Cuts down coal use. The average household saves about 140kg of coal per year.
  • Smoke inhalation, irrespirable particulates, and other toxic emissions are removed during cooking.
  • Household income increases as expenditure on coal reduces significantly.
